Quick answer

  • Domestic plans are cheap. As listed on 28 October 2026, GCash had Travel Saver Plus at P103 per trip and Malayan Travel Master local at P950 per trip, and Oona had Domestic Travel at P266.
  • They mostly cover accidents, medical costs, burial and some travel inconvenience benefits. What counts as a covered delay or cancellation depends on the policy wording.
  • PAGASA says about 20 tropical cyclones enter the Philippine Area of Responsibility each year, peaking from July to October. If you're booking during typhoon season, read how your plan treats weather cancellations.

Boracay, Siargao, El Nido, Bohol, Batanes. Ang dami nating gustong puntahan dito mismo sa Pilipinas, and most of us never think about insurance for a local trip. "Domestic lang naman, bakit pa?" Fair. But a motorbike slip in Siargao, a sprained ankle on a hike, or a typhoon that cancels your flight home can still cost you real money.

So is domestic travel insurance worth it? It depends on your trip. Below is what local plans cover, what they cost as listed on 28 October 2026, and what to watch out for during typhoon season.

What domestic plans usually cover

Each plan is different, so read the benefits list. Based on the plans above, these are the kinds of benefits you'll see:

Medical expenses. Treatment after an accident or, on some plans, sickness during the trip. Oona lists up to P1 million for medical and emergency expenses on its domestic plan. Travel Saver Plus lists P250,000 medical reimbursement, which means you pay first and claim back.

Personal accident. A lump sum if an accident causes death or disablement. Travel Saver Plus lists P500,000.

Travel inconvenience. Benefits for things like delays, baggage problems or cancellations, depending on the plan. Travel Saver Plus lists a P20,000 travel inconvenience benefit. Check the policy wording to see exactly which events count.

Burial benefit. Travel Saver Plus lists P10,000.

Personal liability. Oona lists personal liability benefits, for when you accidentally injure someone or damage their property.

Typhoon season: the big question

PAGASA says more tropical cyclones enter the Philippine Area of Responsibility than anywhere else in the world, with an average of 20 a year and about 8 or 9 crossing the Philippines. It says the peak of the typhoon season is July through October.

So if you're booking a beach trip in that window, you're right to think about cancellations. Here's the honest part: whether a weather cancellation is covered depends entirely on the policy wording.

Some wordings cover delays caused by bad weather. For example, the BDO Elite card insurance terms we read list "inclement weather" as a covered cause for baggage delay, and cover flight delays of more than 6 hours with no alternative transport. The same terms cover trip cancellation if your home is seriously damaged by a typhoon, flood or earthquake within a week of departure and you need to be there.

But the same document also lists natural catastrophes and climatic events among exclusions for certain cancellations. That's a good example of why you can't assume. One policy can treat weather differently depending on the benefit.

Before you buy for a typhoon-season trip, look for these in the wording:

  • Is trip cancellation a benefit at all?
  • Which reasons for cancellation are listed? Is weather one of them?
  • Is there a delay benefit, and after how many hours does it start?
  • Is there an exclusion for natural catastrophes or weather?
  • Do you need to buy the policy before a storm is named or announced?

If the answers matter for your trip, ask the insurer before you pay.

Island trips and activities

A lot of domestic trips involve things a basic plan may not cover:

  • Motorbike and scooter rental. A popular way to get around on many islands. Some policies exclude injuries on motorcycles over a certain engine size. The BDO Elite terms, for example, exclude injuries while riding a motorcycle or scooter over 125cc.
  • Diving and water sports. Check the activities section. Some plans exclude or limit them.
  • Hiking and mountain climbing. Check whether trekking is covered and at what altitude.
  • Boat transfers. Island hopping uses boats. Check whether the plan covers you on a hired boat as well as on licensed public transport.

Do you already have some cover?

You might, without knowing it.

Airline add-ons. Cebu Pacific's CEB TravelSure for flights within the Philippines lists emergency medical treatment, personal accident up to PHP 2,500,000 and baggage loss up to PHP 100,000. See our Cebu Pacific guide.

Credit cards. BPI's card travel insurance covers domestic travel by air, water or land if you charge the fare to an eligible card, but only from check-in or boarding until you get off. For rent-a-car trips, BPI says the destination has to be at least 60 km away. BDO's Elite card terms cover domestic trips of up to 60 days when the entire fare is paid with the card. See our credit card guide.

Health insurance or HMO. If you have an HMO through work, it may cover emergencies in the Philippines. Check the network and emergency rules with your HMO.

How to compare domestic plans

Put two or three plans side by side and check the same things on each:

  1. Medical: paid directly or reimbursed? Reimbursement means you pay the hospital first and claim later, so bring enough cash or card limit.
  2. Medical limit. Compare the medical number, not the personal accident number. They're often very different.
  3. Sickness or accident only? Some benefits only cover accidents.
  4. Travel inconvenience. Which delays, baggage problems and cancellations count, and after how many hours.
  5. Exclusions. Look for motorcycles, water sports, natural catastrophes and pre-existing conditions.
  6. Trip length and area. Travel Saver Plus, for example, lists a maximum of 90 days and covers the Philippines and Southeast Asian countries.

So is it worth it?

It's worth considering when:

  • You'll ride motorbikes, dive, hike or do anything active.
  • You're traveling with kids or older parents.
  • You've paid a lot upfront for non-refundable flights, resorts or tours.
  • You're traveling in typhoon season and the policy covers weather-related delays.
  • You don't have an HMO or other cover that works where you're going.

It matters less when:

  • It's a short city trip and you already have an HMO with a network there.
  • Everything you booked is refundable.

At P103 to P950 per trip on the plans we read, the premium is small compared to an emergency room bill in a provincial hospital or a rebooked flight in peak season. But only if the plan actually covers what you're worried about.

Before you go

  • Save the insurer's hotline in your phone.
  • Keep a screenshot of your policy number.
  • Know the nearest hospital to where you're staying, especially on small islands.
  • Keep receipts for anything you might claim, and get a police or barangay report for theft.

If something happens, our claim guide walks you through the documents.
